Rwanda, and The United States of Africa

友だちに誘われて、国連大学で開催されたルワンダ大統領H.E.Paul Kagameの講演会に行ってきた。
テーマは"Reconciliation and Reconstruction in Rwanda"。

日米ユースフォーラムに続いて、また和解問題を考える機会に出会った。

大統領は"The United States of Africa"という言葉を使った。
頭の中には、ずっとホテル・ルワンダの映像が流れていた。

If America, is the United States of America,
Then why can’t Africa, be the United States of Africa?

And if England, is the United Kingdom,
Then why can’t Africa unite all the kingdoms
and become United Kingdom of Africa?

Million Voicesの歌詞を、再び噛みしめる。

「我々は未だ和解の途上にいる。
　状況は完璧ではないし、完璧になることもないだろう。
　でも、我々は確実に一歩づつ前進してきたし、
　これからも前進し続ける」

そう、早口に言う大統領の言葉の中で、印象に残った言葉。

GIVE US ALTERNATIVE.

なんだか、彼からは、国家元首の威厳ではなく、切実な何かを内に秘めたエネルギーを感じた。
