前から見ようと思ってたRobert L. JossによるStanford GSBの"最終講義"を見た。

切れがあってユーモアたっぷり、みたいなスピーチではなかったけど、彼が引用していたJohn W. Gardnerの言葉が印象的だった。

"And above all, we all want a life of meaning. We want our lives to have meaning"

"Look, meaning is not something you stumble across. You have to build meaning into your life. And you build that meaning into your life by the commitments that you made"

"Your identity is what you've committed yourself to"

アイデンティティは、探して見つかるものじゃない。なぜならそれは、お前がこれまでにコミットしたものによって成り立ってるからだ。

ちょっと調べてみたら、1990年の11月10日、ちょうど今日から22年前に、John Gardnerはマッキンゼーで同じ主旨のスピーチをしていた。
